“Thanking the Moon” by Grace Lin (ISBN 978-0375861017) continues to be a favourite book, particularly for A who enjoys it any time of the year. The words are simple but the pictures are full of preparation and excitement as a family gather together to share in feasting and giving thanks to the Mid Autumn Moon.
We had our own Mid Autumn Moon Festival last month, using the book as a source of inspiration.
The lanterns are a big part of celebration. We decorated ours using water colour paints and felt tip pens.
We made a “moon-honouring table”, complete with our rabbits.
We prepared our “nighttime picnic” which included mooncakes, pomelo and pears.
We also put the “pale green pomelo peel” on heads just as Mie-Mie did.
Once the daylight had started to fail the boys played, enjoying the faint glow of the lanterns and their glow sticks.
