This year we have started to keep a “Poetry Journal” – a place where we can record poems and rhymes that we have learnt or ones we may want to learn in the future.
I started compiling the journals over the summer. S had learnt some poems by heart during the school year so these were the first to be added.
In A’s journal I added the nursery rhyme he recited the most during the holidays.
This year we plan to learn 4 poems – maybe linked to the seasons. The first, with a Winter theme, came from a beautiful book which I received for Christmas. It is entitled “Chickadee’s Song” by Joyce Sidman and Rick Allen taken from “Winter Bees and Other Poems about the Cold” (ISBN 978-0-547-90650-8)
I wrote the poems into our journals and the boys drew a picture to illustrate it.
We also put a copy of the poem in the bathroom.
Each night when we brush our teeth, I recite the poem. After only a couple of days the boys were finishing the ends of the lines. After a week S had remembered the whole poem and A is very nearly there too. Here is S reciting it.
What poems are you planning on reading or learning this year?
