The boys have been asked to make an Easter Bonnet for a parade at school. A couple of years ago we made these beautiful woollen hats but they are too well loved to be worn this year. Inspired by the twigs and natural treasures that birds weaves into beautiful nests we used our stick fairy crowns from the Summer as the nest base.
The boys have a range of soft toy birds and they each chose one to attach into the top of the nest. Simple over stitches around the sticks and through the fabric held the birds in place.
We wanted to add an egg into the nest so used “The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady” by Edith Holden (ISBN 0718115813) to research the eggs of a song thrush and a blackbird (the boys chosen birds).
We covered some plain plastic eggs in masking tape,
and then mixed up some paint to make a similar pattern. I had also attached a pice of cotton with the tape to eventually tie it onto the nest.
Here are the finished bonnets – they look beautiful.
